NF-(Old Ningo)- Okada Operators in Old Ningo a community in the Ningo Prampram District in the Greater Accra region have accused some personnel of the Ghana Police Service in the district of frequent extortion of money from them.
The Operators claimed the police in the area charged them a minimum fee of ghs200.00 over the least infractions.
Speaking to newsfarmgh.com in Old Ningo, 21 years old Okada Operator who gave his name as Joseph stated that the police officers deployed to the area were using the Okada operators to enrich themselves in the area.
He told newsfarmgh.com that they had no Jobs apart from the Okada business, adding that the police were frustrating them without considering the harsh economic conditions they were faced with.
According to Joseph many at times the police arrested them over minor issues and demanded a huge sum of money from them saying failure to pay means their motor bikes would be impounded for weeks, a situation he said was unfortunate.
Mr David Teye Okada Operator revealed that he was the bread winner of a family of five saying his daily proceeds sometimes was less than ghs100.00 cedis but for the frequent frustration from the police he sometimes goes home with empty hands.
Mr Teye said the police were supposed to be their friends but the situation was different in the Old Ningo area.
He called on the district police commander to as a matter of urgency come to their aid, argueing that times were very hard.
“We are ready to support the police so they must also support us as citizens’ he said.
